INTRODUCTION
Oxandrolone is an artificial steroid which is analogous to the natural steroid, testosterone. Oxandrolone is an anabolic steroid that enhances muscle tissue growth and helps in weight gain. However, the drug does not improve the athlete's performance. The drug can rarely cause certain serious and fatal side effects on liver. It is one of the safest drugs for both men and women.
WHAT ARE OXANDROLONE TABLETS USED FOR?
Oxandrolone tablets are prescribed to regain the weight lost after surgery or chronic infections or severe trauma. It promotes weight gain and maintains a healthy body weight in patients who are lean for unknown causes. It also decreases muscle loss caused by the use of steroids.
Oxandrolone tablets are also prescribed to relieve bone pain in patients with osteoporosis (a bone disorder).
HOW DO OXANDROLONE TABLETS ACT?
Oxandrolone tablets prevent the release of testosterone hormone by preventing the luteinizing hormone release from pituitary gland. It promotes the growth of body tissues. It also enhances the production of hemoglobin and red blood cell volume.
AVAILABLE FORMS OF OXANDROLONE
Oxandrolone is available in the form of oral tablets, pills, capsules and injections. Tablets of oxandrolone are available in two strengths, 5 mg and 10 mg.
HOW TO TAKE OXANDROLONE TABLETS?
Oxandrolone tablets are prescribed only for a few weeks. The drug should be taken as prescribed by the doctor. The therapy lasts for 2-4 weeks usually.
For weight gain in adults: Usual dose is 2.5 to 10 mg, 2 to 4 times daily.
For weight gain in elderly: Usual dose is 5 mg, 2 times daily.
For liver damage in adults: Usual dose is 2.5 to 10 mg, 2 to 4 times daily.
However, the dose can range from 2.5 to 20 mg per day.
For bone pain in adults: Usual dose is 2.5 to 20 mg, 2 to 4 times daily.
For weight gain in children: Usual dose is ≤0.1mg / kg / day.
For bone pain in children: Usual dose is ≤0.1mg / kg / day.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS WITH THE USE OF OXANDROLONE TABLETS
Oxandrolone tablets should not be used by patients with prostate cancer, breast cancer, advanced kidney disease, high calcium levels in blood, and by pregnant women.
Patients who had previous allergies to oxandrolone should not use the drug.
The following patients should inform the doctor before taking oxandrolone tablets:
Who have liver disease, lung disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, high cholesterol
Who have history of heart disease, stroke or blood clots
Who are taking blood thinners, or other steroid medicines
MONITORING PARAMETERS
Frequent blood tests
Kidney functioning tested with urine tests
Liver function tests
Bone development should be checked in children every 6 months. This is due to the possibility of bone overgrowth.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF OXANDROLONE TABLETS
The following side effects of oxandrolone tablets need immediate medical help: allergic reactions such as swelling of face, lips, tongue, and throat
A doctor should be consulted if the below side effects occur:
nausea, stomach pain, tiredness, loss of hunger, clay-colored stools, dark urine, jaundice. These are the symptoms of liver problems
vomiting, constipation, muscle and joint pain, weakness, restlessness, confusion, excess thirst, and urination. These are the symptoms of high calcium levels in the blood
shortness of breath
swelling of ankles or feet and weight gain
difficulty in urination
new or worsening of acne
impotence, ejaculation problems, decrease in seminal fluid and testicle size
unusual growth of penis before puberty
increased erection of penis
Females taking oxandrolone tablets may develop male characteristics which can be reversed with testosterone.However, testosterone should be discontinued immediately, and the doctor should be consulted if the following side effects occur: acne, menstrual irregularities, male-pattern hair growth, enlarged clitoris, hoarse voice.
Other side effects which can occur commonly with oxandrolone tablets include:
sleeplessness
swelling of breasts
feeling excited
increased or decreased interest in sex
OVERDOSE AND MISSED DOSE OF OXANDROLONE TABLETS
Overdose: There are no specific symptoms of the overdose with oxandrolone. The doctor should be consulted immediately, if overdose is suspected with the drug. Gastric lavage can be helpful for treating overdose with oxandrolone tablets.
Missed dose: The medicine should be taken at regular intervals every day. If the regular dose is missed, it should be taken immediately as possible. However, if it almost time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped to avoid a double dose.
SPECIAL POPULATIONS
Pregnant women: The drug can harm the unborn baby and cause birth defects. Thus, it should be avoided during pregnancy. During the use of these tablets, effective birth control is recommended.
Breastfeeding women: Breastfeeding is to be avoided as it is not sure if oxandrolone enters the breast milk or harm the nursing baby.
Elderly: There is an increased risk of enlargement of prostate gland or prostate cancer in older men. Thus, older men should talk to their doctors, to understand the individual risks.
